FIND YOUR RE-PURPOSE IN LIFE
SUMMARY: The Green House Gallery, located in the heart of Houston's Montrose
district, is hosting a celebration of innovative, re-purposed artwork on November 7.
Following its glowing debut in October, the Green House Gallery is hosting a
celebration of re-purposed, recycled and rediscovered artwork. One of Houston’s
youngest art venues, the Green House Gallery celebrated its opening on October 3,
garnering enthusiastic reviews as an eco-friendly collective – and gaining more
accolades with its diverse, innovative collection of artwork in diverse media. While
keeping its first “green” roots, the gallery is clearly establishing an artistic identity in its
own right – offering an eclectic and appealing selection of paintings, prints, giclee,
ceramics, metal sculpture, wearable art and jewelry.
In the upcoming Re-Purpose show, the gallery follows up on its green debut by
showcasing artwork that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Metal sculptures by
luminary emerging artist Jonatan Lopez transform pedestrian materials such as oil
drums and bicycle parts into whimsical geckos and butterflies, graceful torsos or
striking, dramatic free-standing pieces. Monique Weston’s jewelry embraces a
stunning range of repurposed materials -- cuckoo clock parts, door hinges, chain saw
blades, acupuncture needles, computer parts, eyeglass screws, and many other
unexpectedly beautiful components. Giclée prints by Lois Morton include recycled
candy-bar wrappers, confetti from concerts and textiles, transforming waste material
into intricate, scintillating images. Nan Stombaugh fashions simple, elegant rings from
eye-catching vintage buttons. On a more abstract level, Stombaugh’s collages place
conventional images in unconventional contexts, and Lopez’ sculpture “Columbine
Crossing” offers haunting commentary using the ordinary image of a school-crossing
sign.
The Green House Gallery fosters a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where artists
greet visitors and offer art demonstrations, in a stately house that opens onto a
bough-canopied veranda. Unlike many galleries, the Green House provides
comfortable seating where viewers can relax and enjoy the artwork with refreshments.
The artists encourage questions about their media, creative process, and intellectual
and cultural investment in their rich, unique pieces.
Go green at the Re-Purposed Reception and feel the Green House effect on Friday,
November 7, from 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. Wine and snacks will be served.
The gallery is open from 11 a.m-6 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, and by
appointment. The gallery will also hold a reception and open house every first Friday
of the month during the holidays.
Green House Gallery Artists for November:
Helena Gijsbers van Wijk, Mina Agah, Lois Morton, Adine Rotman, Miquel Correll,
Monique Weston, Keyvan Yousefi, Jonatan Lopez, and Nan Stombaugh.

ART EXHIBIT: GREENERY GALA - A NEW LEAF
SUMMARY: Turn over a new leaf at the Green House Gallery, located in the heart of
Houston's Montrose district, with a distinctive, living exhibit that blends plants and
artwork on December 5.
The Green House Gallery is celebrating Houston ’s long growing seasons and
temperate holidays with a profusion of greenery and signature artwork. One of
Houston’s youngest art venues, the Green House Gallery promotes eco-friendly
themes with an eclectic and appealing body of paintings, prints, giclée, ceramics,
metal sculpture, wearable art and jewelry. For the holiday season, the core group of
artists is spicing up the selection with playful seasonal themes, including living plants,
holiday cards, handmade ceramics, gleaming metal snowflake sculptures, jewelry,
and lively collages.
The new exhibit highlights Helena Gijsbers van Wijk’s captivating, feminine torsos,
delicately formed in textured ceramic and splashed with gorgeous glazes. Miquel
Correl’s ceramics, also exuberantly glazed, range from small functional pieces to
contemporary serving-ware and vases. Metal sculpture by luminary emerging artist
Jonatan Lopez is rapidly gaining a following: scrap metal is transformed into
whimsical geckos and butterflies, sinuous sea creatures or abstract free-standing
pieces. Lois Morton’s giclée prints and collages incorporate festive materials such as
Halloween candy wrappers, confetti from concerts, party napkins and images from
Las Vegas. Adine Rotman’s watercolor animals play with Christmas ornaments.
The gallery’s festive wear includes handbags by Keyvan Yousefi and brilliantly exotic
jewelry by Mina Agah. Nan Stombaugh’s “retro-classy” jewelry uses semiprecious
and vintage materials, including WWII-era glass and antique buttons. Monique
Weston’s playful new collection of necklaces uses miniature cars to honor Houston’s
“art cars.”
The Green House Gallery fosters an unpretentious atmosphere, including prices that
make art accessible to all, from first-time buyers to longtime collectors. Artists greet
visitors and offer demonstrations, in a stately house that opens onto a bough-
canopied veranda. The artists encourage questions about their materials and
creative processes.
Come share the gift of art in Montrose; turn over a new leaf with the Green House
Gallery community on Friday, December 5, from 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. Wine and
snacks will be served. The exhibit will run through January 31.
The gallery is open from 11 a.m-6 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, and by
appointment. A reception is held every first Friday of the month.
