Why Go Green?
Our artists discuss what it means to them.
Welcome to the Green House Gallery!
“Going green” fits in with values I was raised with: don’t waste things, clean up after
yourself, and respect your possessions.

Years ago, I read an account of a sumptuous dinner party in which everyone sat stiffly “in
awe of their possessions.” The phrase really struck me, as a sharp contrast to the way we
often view our possessions as disposable, or replaceable. My Depression-era
grandparents were materially monogamous, so to speak: loyal to simple things and
reluctant to waste anything. In contrast, many of us are now materially promiscuous,
viewing things as easily replaced or upgraded. Learning about “going green” has
challenged me to find a happy medium between being in awe of my possessions and
needlessly discarding things that could be re-purposed.

My jewelry gives new life to a wide array of “repurposed” materials, including hardware,
antique watch cogs, clock parts, fine tools, organic material, lace and semi-precious
stones. These eclectic recycled materials are all part of a unified theme: the notion that no
pedigree is needed for beauty or elegance. Each composition is greater than the sum of its
parts. The viewer's first response is hopefully, "Oh, that's beautiful!" -- followed by curiosity
about its components.

Artwork serves as visual persuasion for balance and harmony in our dealings with our
surroundings. In my paintings, I aim to foster balance in the spaces where my work hangs
